UAE announces first Arab woman Astronaut. Who is Nora Al-Matrooshi?
The United Arab Emirates
has added 2 new members to its astronaut training program, out of which
includes Nora Al-Matrooshi, the first Arab woman to be an astronaut.
This announcement was given by the Prime Minister of UAE, his Highness Shaikh
Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum in his Twitter account.
These two new astronaut
candidates will join the already 2 astronauts training at NASA. Let’s take a
look at what the UAE has done in the field of space exploration.
About the UAE Space Agency
The United Arab Emirates space agency was established in 2014. It has about 6 billion in funding.
There are about 50 companies supporting the space activities of the UAE. Their main focus is to monitor the environment from satellites.
They also said they won't be developing launch vehicles. They have already launched a large number of satellites into Orbit.
They have set their targets towards space tourism and establishing a city on Mars
UAE Space Agency Achievements
Despite its short time, the UAE Space Agency has had remarkable growth. Some of the key achievements are :
- In October 2018, they launched KhalifaSat which is totally designed tested, and built by Emirati scientists
- Also, they have successfully launched a mars probe "Hope" into Mars and it got succeeded in its first attempt
- One of the most impressive facts is that the average age of scientists working on this Mars mission is 27
- UAE has also planned to have a mars settlement by 2017
- They have also planned to develop space tourism
Nora Al- Matrooshi
Nora Al-Matrooshi was
born in 1993. She is 28 years old.
Her hometown is Sharjah. She completed her
BE degree in Mechanical Engineering from UAE University.
She is the first
person in the UAE to have won an International Olympiad Medal. Before this, she
was working as an engineer at National Petroleum Corporation Company.
Her motto
to succeed is “Do what makes you happy".Out of 4305 applicants, only 2 people were selected, Nora Al Matrooshi is one of them.

Mohammad AlMulla
Mohammad AlMulla was born in 1988. He is the second chosen person to train as an astronaut. He is 33 years old.
He has a degree in Law and Economics. He is also a pilot at Airwing Centre, Dubai Police.
He has 1500 flight hours. He received Bravery Award during his service.
His motto is "The person who pursues their goal will achieve it no matter how long it takes"
Conclusion
These 2 new astronauts will join the other two training at NASA. This team will represent UAE in the space age.
When these astronauts go to space, it will inspire a whole generation of young kids.
