Space Elevator

Elevators have always taken us to higher floors. But is it possible for them to take us to space?  This space elevator is one such concept. Let's take a look at what stopping us from building a cost-effective space elevator.

Why it's necessary?

Rockets have taken us to space all these decades. So why is there a sudden requirement for a Space elevator?.

It is because in the case of a space elevator, we don't need rocket fuel to reach space and it will reduce the cost of traveling to space. Also using a space elevator we can launch satellites very easily without any risk. And if we use solar panels along with the space elevator we might get a tremendous amount of energy.

Construction

In order to construct this massive project, we shouldn't start constructing from the ground. At first, we should place a satellite at the geostationary Orbit. Because this is the orbit where the centrifugal force of the earth and the gravitational force equal out.

If we want to have a space elevator we should come to balance the weight by pulling out. In order to do that a wire should be drawn from the satellite to the earth's surface.

Why material is important?

The material which is used to make the wire is the most important factor. If we use Steel, according to design parameters the width of the wire should be about 50 mm at the bottom and about 1.76 x 10^54 meters at the top which is pretty much impossible.

Carbon nanotube Bridge

If we consider making it from carbon nanotubes there may be a decent chance we will succeed. Carbon nanotubes can hold up to 130 GPa and have a low density of about 1300kg/m^3. But carbon nanotubes are still in the research phase and not yet available for daily usage

Challenges to be faced

There are many challenges to be faced to construct a perfect space elevator. The material used to construct the space elevator should be light, affordable, and stable, or else it will snap leading to a lot of space debris. Also, the space elevator should

  • Eliminate vibration on the wire
  • Manage a lot of power
  • Should avoid space debris
  • Counter the adverse weather in the lower atmosphere
  • Take control of waves

Also, carbon nanotubes should be manufactured in large numbers

Conclusion

In conclusion how we can say that space elevators may cost really high on construction but once they are operational they will become very cost-effective and affordable for all people.

That said, we can not construct a space elevator right away because we lack the technology and innovation to build one. However, it can be expected in at least 30 to 40 years' time. If the construction of this massive project is done, it would be one of the most advanced ways of transportation.
