Can ISRO beat NASA by 2030?
ISRO |
ISRO is one of the fastest-growing space organizations in the world. NASA was founded in 1958. NASA has the biggest space budget but there are other organizations such as ROSCOSMOS and ESA; then there are smaller organizations such as CNSA, JAXA and ISRO. These are the big six space organizations in the world. ISRO's budget is smaller than 5 of these organizations but is higher than JAXA.
ISRO was founded in 1969 only about a month after the Apollo 11 landing. This makes ISRO one of the oldest organizations in the world. The founder of this organization (ISRO) is called Vikram Sarabhai. He thought India shouldn't be left out in the space industry or else it would suffer in the long run.
The main objective of ISRO is to launch satellites and in order to launch satellites they have built their own rockets. In 1975 only after 6 years in the industry, ISRO launched their first satellite called Aryabhatta. This was done with the help of the Russian Space Organisation roscosmos. And since then they have broken many records in space.
Records
Mangalyaan 1 |
In 2014 they have launched a satellite to Mars called Mangalyaan 1. This makes them the fourth country to do so only after the US, Russia and ESA. And India is the only country to be successful in its first attempt.
Another major milestone done by ISRO is that in 2017 they broke the record of a maximum number of satellites in a single rocket. That is 104 satellites in a PSLV rocket.
In 2020 they are the fourth country with more satellites in orbit.
Lessons learned
Chandrayaan 2 |
Things didn't go as planned in 2019 when the Chandrayaan 2 probe crash-landed into the moon. Despite these attempts, ISRO has a far higher success rate compared to other countries. They are also cost-effective and efficient.
In recent years ISRO has collaborated with private industries to increase progress in the space industry. ISRO follows the basic rule of success on a smaller budget.
Future Vision
ISRO Space Station |
ISRO is planning to have its first crewed mission in 2023 called Gaganyaan. In this mission, they will be sending 3 vyomanauts to space. If they do this they will become the fourth country to send humans to space only after the US, Russia, and China.
In 2030, they will send their own Space Station into orbit. The International Space Station will retire in 2024 so other countries have to depend on ISRO to keep their astronauts in space.
